If you've been here before, you know that we LOVE applique! If this is your first time on the blog, welcome, we're so excited to have you with us! Here at Laser Cut Quilts, we're devoted to all things applique, and we love sharing our favorite tips and techniques with you! Embellishing is one of our favorite ways to spruce up applique projects. Don't you love when you get to incorporate own sense of creativity and style into your products? So do we! Today we'll be sharing three of our favorite ways to embellish your next applique project!
Buttons are a staple when it comes to embellishing your applique, without breaking the bank. We all know we probably have more spare buttons lying around our craft rooms than we care to admit. So why go to the store if you're already prepping for your own button shop? Embellishments don't always have to match exactly in size, color, and style. If you're working on a vintage quilt, those old buttons from your "secret stash" would make the perfect addition to your project. However, on the other hand, if your applique requires more of a uniform style, matching buttons might be the way to go. For example you can embellish the "Sew She Did" Laser Cut Kit with matching cherry red buttons, or you mix and match reds of different sizes. You can even place buttons on the top of decadent pastries as seen above from Lori Holt's "Let's Bake" Sew Along. If you choose to use buttons as embellishment, place the buttons at the end of your project. Matching colored thread or invisible thread can be used to fasten buttons to the applique.
Let's be honest, we're not sure any one can ever get enough rick rack! Not only is it the perfect embellishment when you're looking for something a little more fancy and frilly, but it has endless creative possibilities. Simply embellish as edging around your applique pieces, or as any cord, curly q, etc. Not the biggest fan, but still searching for a way to add some pizzazz!? Try using your favorite ribbon! As pictured above, ribbon can be used to help bring your applique to life! Kimberbell Design uses ribbon to create a charming Christmas present tag from their "Jingle All the Way Quilt" that has us singing "Jingle Bells" in October!
Have you ever seen an applique quilt and thought "Wow, look at how exquisite the embroidery is!". It's amazing what a touch of embroidery can do to help make your quilt unique. Hand and machine embroidery are both very popular types of embellishments. Looking for a creative, out of the box way to hand embroider your applique? Look no further! Our Laser cut kit "Sew She Did" designed by Lori Holt, features the cutest hand embroidery pictured above. Lori Holt has also brought to life her not so scary scarecrow, from her Autumn Love Sew Along, as seen above. If you're more interested in the magic of machine embroidery, Kimberbell Designs offers the cutest machine embroidery patterns, such as the Broomhilda's Bakery quilt pictured above. We keep catching ourselves dreaming of ghosts and goblins on Halloween night with the "Spooky" lettering featured in Kimberbell's quilt!
No matter how you choose to embellish your next applique project, it's important to incorporate embellishments that uniquely reflect you or your quilt! You can even mix and match embellishments such as embroidery floss and rick rack to create a 3D feature, or use an array of different embellishments. If you've embellished a Laser Cut Quilt from us, we would love to see it! Send us an email or tag us on Instagram/ Facebook for a chance to be featured! We're sending you all the warmest wishes and happy quilting!
